That's right, alphabet stamps aren't just for scrapbooking! My very creative neighbor, Melissa Anunson, used her Big Deal alphabet stamp set to stamp her couch. Here's what she had to say about it...
What inspired you to stamp your couch?
It was a garage sale couch -- off white. (I have two elementary-age kids. I would NEVER buy a white couch unless it was from a garage sale!) It was starting to show stains, so I was hoping to cover it up. Plus, do something unique and inspirational.
What did you use for stamps and ink?
I used Stampin' Up! Craft ink and Big Deal Alphabet stamps. Plus, the smaller dots are actually smaller alpha stamps in a lighter craft ink.
How long did it take you?
It took hours. Part of it was coming up with the words to stamp. The other part was laying out the words. Had I just done a design with one Definitely Decorative stamp it would've gone a lot faster -- I probably could've finished in an hour.
How is it holding up?
There's some wear, but considering I've washed it several times and we've sat on it every day for a year, I'm not disappointed. It actually gives me an opportunity to do something else. I'm thinking about going over the top with a different stamp in a different color. I think the words in the background will make a nice background image and I can start this layered look.
Any tips?
I just did the cushions on one side, thinking I could flip them over for when the in-laws come over (they already think I'm kind of weird, don't need them judging me on my verb couch!). That made it go faster and allow for some flexibility. I'm sure some of the stain-resistant features of the couch prevented the ink from curing all the way, so as always, test first! I did a test of one stamp set on the inside of the cushion and decided that because of the bumpy nature of the canvas, I didn't like how it looked. Less is more -- you can always ADD, it's MUCH harder to subtract. Go for Round 1, test it out for a week and add more in round 2 if you think it needs it.
Thanks for sharing Melissa!
