Tips for Making Easy Pop Up Cards:
- Pick your patterned paper first. You’ll need a 6×6 piece of patterned paper for the inside pop-up. An all-over pattern with no obvious up and down pattern works the best. Both sides should look okay together if it’s a double-sided designer series paper. (Watch the video above to see papers that don’t work as well and why.)
- Make your card base: 4-1/4” x 11” score at 4-1/4” and 5-1/2”. Fold on score lines.
- Decide if you want to use Patterned Paper or other decorations on the front. If you do want to use patterned paper you’ll want your pattern to flow across the scoreline of the card. Start with a Patterned Paper piece that is 4″ x 5″ and then cut 1″ off the top so that you have 1” x 4” and 4” x 4” pieces. Make sure you tape your pieces to your card base so that the patterns match up.
- Decorate your card front. I find it easiest to decorate the front of my card first. Keep your layers to a minimum because the inside pop-up already makes this a bulky card. Add ribbon at the top if you’d like.
- Tape above the second score line to create a “book binding” card.
How to Make the Pop Up for your Pop Up Cards:
- Place your 6″ x 6″ piece of patterned paper with the side you want showing on the inside UP.
- Fold your paper in half both ways and give it a nice crease with a bone folder. Be sure to line up corners and edges as much as possible.
- Flip your paper over so that the pattern you want on the inside faces DOWN.
- Fold it in half diagonally ONCE.
- Gently fold on fold lines so it folds into a square
- To put inside your card, tuck the top corner into the fold and make sure all the corners are inside the card. Hold in place and add adhesive to the top of the folded square. Fold card front down. Flip it over, add tape and fold closed to tape down.
Tips: Practice on scratch paper if you’re unsure and want to try the folding before you use a pretty piece of paper. Use glue instead of double-sided tape to give yourself a little more wiggle room.

LOVE your ideas, Jessica! Thanks for sharing. I just watched the video with the triangular pieces on the front of a card and failed to pin it. Hopefully I can remember! You made it easy but I didn’t get the dimensions but think I can figure them out. I’m just getting back into card making after a 1 year hiatus!
Welcome back to card making! I’m not sure exactly which card you’re taking about with the triangular pieces on the front, but here’s how to cut paper on an angle: https://www.inkitupwithjessica.com/tips-for-cutting-paper-on-an-angle/ and here’s how to make one sheet wonder cards: https://www.inkitupwithjessica.com/how-to-make-one-sheet-wonder-cards/ so it might be one of those.
I appreciate you always being so happy sharing
Thanks so much Diane!
