There’s nothing like a creative card fold to impress your friends and family… especially the ones that make cards themselves.
Today I’ve got the how-to for you on making an interlocking gatefold card or a buckle gatefold card or an interlocking buckle gatefold card or whatever YOU want to call it! 🙂
I show you from start to finish how to make one of these fun fold cards in this video:
Paper Sizes:
Card base: 4-1/4″ x 11″ scored at 2-3/4″ from each end
Patterned Paper: TWO pieces 2-1/2″ x 4″
Instructions & Tips:
- Cut your 8-1/2″ x 11″ card stock in half the long way at 4-1/4″ to get TWO card bases that are 4-1/4″ x 11″
- Score at 2-3/4″ from each end
- Fold on the score lines and use a bone folder to give your folds a good crease. Make sure that your card stock meets in the middle of the card!
- If you want the pattern on your front panels to line up, start by cutting a piece that’s 4″ x 5″ and then cut it in half at 2-1/2″
- Using a darker card stock color for your card base? Here are quick tips on how to cut paper for the inside of your cards.
- To make your interlocking buckle, use Layering Square dies OR try circles or any other shapes you have. A larger outside square makes the frame wider and sturdier.
- If you can’t cut out both shapes at the same time to make the frame, cut the INSIDE shape FIRST and then you can center the larger shape around it to cut out the frame.
- Be careful where you put your adhesive so you don’t glue your card shut!!

Love the easy gatefold card. I’m also printing out because I terrible at finding videos when I need them.
Janelle, Have you thought about creating a Pinterest board where you could save links to videos so you could find them later? Not that printing out is bad, sometimes I just need to watch a video again!
Great instructions! Love the card.
Very cute card, Jessica! I’m definitely going to give this a try.
I am so going to try this card. I’m always looking for new folds to try. Thank you.
You always make it look so easy…..
I’ve never made an interlocking gate Fold Card, but you make it look easy! Thank you for the instructions. Can’t wait to get started.
I like your card idea don’t know when I will try it.
Love this idea ! Cannot wait to try.
I don’t have layering square dies, so how do I cut out the squares without one?
Hi Caroline, If you have a Square Punch you could use that to cut the middle and then trim around it with a paper cutter or scissors to create the buckle. Otherwise, you could try to cut the squares just with scissors or a paper cutter but that would definitely be more difficult.
Can you please make suggestions for fun Christmas cards for my grandchildren?

Can you please the name of the adhesive tape roller you used?
I used SNAIL adhesive from Stampin’ Up! which is no longer available for purchase. Now I use their Stampin’ Seal instead, it’s also a double-sided tape.
Very easy to follow and cards came out great. Thank you!
You’re welcome! Thanks for letting me know.
Easy to follow instructions. Will definitely give this a go. Hadn’t made frames using dies before.
Thanks Maeve, I hope you do try making frames with your dies. Let me know how it goes!
